Lists of settlements - one of the main and most informative source for rural resettlement. Lists are a source of additional information in the search, and in some cases may be even more informative than any old map. The lists of settlements reflects both the administrative and territorial division of the province, county, parish, the geographical location of the settlements, and the socio-economic and cultural ties that have been established in rural areas. In the 60-ies. XIX century. there is an urgent need for statistics on the settlements is in the countryside and, most importantly, it is possible to collect such data and the subsequent publication of lists of settlements. At the Ministry of Interior in 1863 for this purpose is formed Central Statistical Committee (hereinafter CSC). With the formation of CSK already in 1860 from the province began receiving the necessary materials, and in 1861 began publishing the list of settlements. In the period from 1861 to 1885 was published 43 issue lists of settlements, each of which is devoted to a separate province. The all-Russian edition of the list of settlements of pre-revolutionary Russia was the only one. Further, this work has been entrusted to the local zemstvo bodies.
