Consolidation of Democracy in Ghana's Fourth Republic : The Role of the Electoral Commission

Bok av Shadrack Bentil
The consolidation of democracy requires the removal of contending threats to democracy whilst improving upon the successes achieved to a stage of high democratic performance. The failure of an Election Management Body (EMB) to enforce the constitutional provisions and electoral laws can reduce the quality of elections, cripple citizen's participation, erode democratic cultures and creates avenues for electoral violence. Thus, the book explored the roles played by the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana in the consolidation of democracy in the Fourth Republic. Apart from the analysis and discussion of Electoral Commission and Democratic Consolidation inside out, Bentil shows how informal institutions influence the appointments and budgetary demands of the Electoral Commission of Ghana. The author, finally, highlights some recommendations that could be considered by policy makers in democratic States.
