Diary of Rural Pupils During the Period of the Republic of China

Bok av Zhou Jianzhong
This book contains the diaries of five ordinary rural primary students in the early 1930s. The largest feature of these diaries lies in recording and narrating the real life of children in children's language. Although each diary is not in a large length, they are very real, full of fun, without a tiny bit of mannerism. These diaries include both children's innocence, rural idyllic scenery, the enjoyable school and family life, and the description on the poor farmer's life, as well as the personnel experiences in national crisis and unrest. What is more rare and commendable is that these diaries are filled with a strong sense of social responsibility and mission in all respects. The narrations concerning the major historical events such as the ethnic conflicts between China and Japan, the September 18th Incident and the big floods in the Yangtze River Basin reflected their deep concerns for China's social contradictions and national crises in the 1930s. These diaries exhibited before us the inner world of the special population as ordinary rural primary students in a completely and truthfully manner.
