Li Zongren, General First Class of the China's National Revolutionary Army and leader of the "e;Guangxi Faction"e; within the Kuomintang (KMT), was one of the figures who had an important influence in the Northern Expedition. He was elected vice president under the 1948 KMT constitution. After Chiang Kai-Shek was forced to relinquish power, Li served as the acting president at one time and failed to save the National Government by reconciliation. Afterwards, he left for the United States. However, he together with his wife Guo Dejie returned to Beijing in 1965 and was welcomed by * and other leaders of the CPC. He died in Beijing on January 30, 1969.
