He participated in the Revolution of 1911 in his early years. During the Northern Expedition, the 6th Army of the National Revolutionary Army, led by him and Lin Boqu, occupied Nanjing; during the Anti-Japanese War, he was in charge of fighting against Japan in five war zones north of the Yangtze River and provided mutual support for guerrilla wars in the enemy's rear area conduct by the Communist Party. During the War of Liberation, he served as Director of the Pacification Office in Changsha and became the chief contributor to the Hunan Uprising. He was a rare "e;genius in the army"e; and "e;scholarly distinguished and admirable general"e; in the Kuomintang camp. He had four marriages, with his emotional journey just as his life path full of ups and downs and legend. After the founding of new China, he became * governor of Hunan province, Vice Chairman of the National Defense Commission, and vice chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC).
