About 60 short and excellent novels composed by Cheknov in 1886 are collected in this volume. The period between 1886 and 1892 is a major turning point during the development period of the writer. During this period, a kind of lyrical and psychological novel is gradually formed. Vanka is a representative work. As depicted in this work, a nine-year-old Vanka lost his parents and had to work as an apprentice. He wrote to his grandpa to express his pain as an apprentice on Christmas Eve. He was no longer eager to be an apprentice anymore and expressed his yearning for his grandpa and hometown.
