aLiza of Lambeth
Bok av William Maugham
Liza of Lambeth is the maiden and famous work of Maugham's full-length novels. On October 3rd of 1892, the eighteen-year-old Maugham became a student in medical school of London Thomas hospital, the medical career for five years not only made him have chance to understand the living conditions of the bottom but also make him learn to view the life and society with clod and sharp sight like the scalpel. His first novel Liza of Lambeth was written by the naturalism technique according to what he saw and heard as an intern doctor in the slum to deliver for the puerperal. It describes the short life and tragic death of a beautiful girl who was bounded by her mother in the slum, actually reflecting the working-class People's Daily lives in London in the turn of the century through an adultery story of the working-class people. It is real, bold and has the humor of sympathy.
