Imperial Guards tells the story about the young emperor Zhu Houzhao disguising in lantern's festival in the first year of Zhengde Ming Dynasty; the honest and straightforward cousin with extraordinary martial art skills from Liu family, Bazhou, were caught without any reason. The novel has depicted the phenomenon that induced by the eunuchs, emperor Zhu Zhaohou paid less attention to the national affairs and never cared about the living condition of the public but played with the music prostitutes to reflect the darkness, cruelty and corruption of eunuch politics and Dongchang and Xichang. At the same time, it also shows the intriguing between the imperial officers and the eunuchs in a complicated form. Under such complex and dangerous contradictions, the novel used the distinct writing style to present the extraordinary love between Liuqi, the farmer from Bazhou, and Yang'e, the girl he pursued for.
