Hungry Daughter

Bok av Hong Ying
Hungry Daughters is set in Chongqing, which located in the intersection of the Yangtze River and the Jialing River. Described by Hong Ying, Chongqing in this work is somewhat similar to "e;large Shanghai"e; in other literary works: steamships with steam whistles in the river, calculation of common citizens in daily life, moist mist in air, big love and hatred deeply hidden at heart, seemingly apathetic family affection, putrescent foul smell, and floating dead bodies in the Yangtze River. A slum, which is similar to a shanty town in Shanghai, is a place where evil people and evil practices are accompanied by rumor and abuse. In the attic, there is crowded life without privacy, involving tense relationships between mother and daughter, blood ties, intimacy between sister and brother, and resentment from hunger. Like other ordinary girls at the growth stage, the heroine meets with many troubles, and also have such actual love and hatred as are not possessed by others.
