About the book:Western Expedition Records and Records on Boundary between China and Russia are the masterpieces of Zou Daijun.Zou Daijun, styled Zhenbai or Yuanfan, was born in Xinhua (Longhui for now), Hunan and one of the initiators and founders of modern cartography of China. Western Expedition Records (Four Volumes) was the diaries of Zou Daijun when he travelled to UK and Russia with Liu Ruifen, the Director of the Court of Sacrificial Worship.Liu Ruifen led a group of 20 persons, starting from Shanghai, travelling through East China Sea, South China Sea, Strait of Malacca, Indian Ocean, Gulf of Aden, Red Sea and Mediterranean, and finally landing on Marseilles, France. Then, they took a train and ship to London England.Zou Daijun made detailed records in the location, terrain, territory, landscape, sea, politics & religions, history, customs, products and current affairs of the countries and regions along the way.However, he did not record anything he saw or heard in the travelling to Russia.Records on Boundary between China and Russia focuses on the research of the strike of the border between China and Russia and the geographical features along the border. It provides accurate researches and discussions on the failure of diplomatic failure between China and Russia, reasons of agreement conclusion, territory cessions, strategic positions of mountains, Kalun & Paibo and milage, with special stress on the enhancing the frontier infrastructure and national defence construction.The two books are edited on the basis of the books dated 1897 and 1911, respectively, and include Geographic Materials of Lianghu Academy and Courses on Japanese Land of Lianghu Academy.
