The fourth and second to last volume of the extensive history of the second Vatican Council, written by an international team of specialists under the guidance of Giuseppe Alberigo, church historian from Bologna, deals with its arguably most dramatic period. Three vital council texts seemed to be ready for adoption: church, ecumenicalism and freedom of religion. But the 'black week' (settimana nera) of November 1964 brought about massive curtailments for the benefit of council minorities, such as in the question of the bishops' collegiality. A first frost chilled the conciliar spring during the 'November crisis'.
